Packing and Preparing for Your Move

The safety of your belongings during transport begins with proper packing. Preventing damage to your goods by properly preparing and packing your appliances, furniture and personal possessions is a key factor in protecting your items and insuring a smooth relocation to your new home. Below you will find tips on how to pack your belongings safely, as well as a list of the supplies CBM carries for your convenience.

If your shipment contains family heirlooms, delicate china or crystal, you may wish to further discuss the potential of a full or partial pack with your professional moving and storage coordinator.

Items to have on hand for packing:

• Standard boxes, sizes small through extra large

• Specialty boxes for mirrors, pictures, lamps, files and clothing

• Strong packing tape

• Scissors or a sharp knife

• Labels or stickers

• Felt tipped marker for labeling

• Notebook and pen to inventory contents of boxes

• Clean white packing paper and bubble wrap

• Paper pads to wrap larger, awkward items

Important: Never pack with newspaper as the ink can rub off and become imbedded in certain items.

Boxes: The larger the box, the lighter the items in it should be.

Small Box (1.5 cubic feet): For packing books, tools, movies, compact discs, papers, plates, china, glasses, mugs and all other small, heavy items.

Medium Box (3.1 cubic feet): For packing dense clothing such as shirts and jeans, small toys, electronics, non-fragile kitchenware, small appliances and other odds and ends.

Large Box (4.5 cubic feet): For packing less dense clothing such as sweaters and sweatshirts, pots, pans, small pictures, toys and lighter odds and ends.

Extra Large Box (6.1 cubic feet): For packing blankets, linens, comforters, pillows, stuffed animals and any larger, awkward items lacking much weight.

Specialty Boxes: Use lamp boxes and paper pads to pack your lamps. Use picture boxes and paper pads to pack your non-oil paintings and larger pictures. You can usually fit two average sized pictures in each box. Use file boxes to store contents of filing cabinets and credenzas during transit. Use wardrobe boxes for suits, dresses, coats, silk or delicate articles of clothing that could easily wrinkle. Please ask your professional moving and storage representative to have a crate built for any larger item you are concerned about.
