How to Choose a Mover
Selecting the right moving company is one of the most important steps you will make during your entire moving process. It is important that you thoroughly research your moving options and prospective movers before hiring a team to spend the day in your home, moving all of your items. Below you will find a list of tips to help you know what to look for and what to watch out for when hiring your mover.
What to Look for in a Mover
- Your mover should be a member of the American Moving and Storage Association.
- Your mover should be an Accredited Member of the Better Business Bureau. Also, make sure that you mover is in good standing and has resolved any claims or complaints on file.
- Your mover should always offer free, no obligation moving estimates, whether being preformed in-person or by phone or email.
- Your mover should have all of their terms & conditions, company policies and local contact information easily accessible on their website.
- Make sure the mover has insurance and is licensed by the proper authority.
- For moves from one State to another, a U.S. DOT number is issued by FMCSA. You can double-check a mover's license on www.protectyourmove.gov For moves within a State, requirements vary. Check with your State, county or local consumer affairs agency or your State Attorney General.
- All of your mover’s workers should be fully trained employees and not subcontracted workers or laborers from temp-agencies.
- When moving across state lines, read Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move a booklet from the Federal government that you mover is required to make available to you when contracted to perform an interstate move
Red Flags
- The mover requires a large deposit to schedule your move.
- The mover accepts cash only.
- The mover claims that your items are covered under their insurance.
- The moving company’s phone is answered without giving the company name (“Movers,” or Moving Company.”)
- The mover refuses to offer any references.
- The mover does not offer any valuation options to cover your shipment.
- The mover provides and hourly estimate when your move is crossing state lines at any point (this is illegal and can result in the business being shut down).
