College Bound University
Learning how to be a mover is not easy. There are a lot of sides to moving beyond carrying a customer's furniture. By training our movers to handle all aspects of various situations, CBM enables them to move more than furniture... they can move families, homes and businesses with great care and attention to detail.
Each class is taught by either the Field Operations Manager or a Senior Crew Chief. Each mover is required to take the classes to advance within the ranks. Once a mover has achieved Crew Chief status, he or she is encouraged to continue taking the classes. This way, the information will always remain fresh and each customer will receive consistent and quality service.
The six classes we currently offer are:
- Customer Service
- Box Packing
- Map Reading
- Paperwork & Waivers
- Driving
- Department of Transportation (DOT)
Compliance
Customer Service
This class focuses on how a Crew Chief should interact with a customer.
Some of the points that are covered are:
- How to greet the customer
- Job site etiquette
- Unique situations and the best way to communicate with the customer
Box Packing
This class teaches the movers the proper way to pack items and the materials that should be used.
Some of the points that are covered are:
- What items should be packed in which boxes
- The proper ways to set up and seal boxese
- The best way to pack specific rooms, including kitchens and bedrooms
- The safest way to pack breakable items
- The items that CBM should not pack
Map Reading
The movers review how to read a map and navigate through unfamiliar areas.
This class focuses on:
- How to find the desired destination on the map
- How to navigate from the starting location to the end destination
- How to reorient themselves if the movers are unsure which direction to go
- Alternate means of obtaining directions should the location not be listed on the map
Paperwork & Waivers
It is necessary that all paperwork be filled out properly. This benefits both the customer and the movers. This class teaches Crew Chiefs exactly what must be completed correctly.
This class focuses on:
- How to fill out and explain each page to the customer
- Which items must be signed before the move can begin
- What each waiver means and the situations when each one should be signed
- Which fields must be signed to complete the job
Driving
Navigating a 24' truck packed with a customer's belongings is much different than driving a passenger car. We spend time ensuring that each driver is knowledgeable about the differences.
Some of the points that are covered are:
- Understanding the proper use and function of all of the parts of the truck
- How and when to use a lift gate or a ramp
- General safe driving habits
- How to act as a spotter for a driver (used when backing the truck up or navigating a difficult turn)
DOT Compliance
The Department of Transportation is the governing agency for all motor carrier companies, such as CBM. They have set up rules and regulations to protect each company's customers, and it is very important that CBM be compliant with all of them. In this class we inform the movers which regulations apply to them and what they need to do to adhere to them.
Some of the points are:
- How to fill out a log book, which records the number of hours a driver has been working. This helps the customers by ensuring they do not receive movers that are over-tired.
- How to check the general functions of the truck. If a check is not done, CBM could not ensure that the truck is in good and working order. This benefits the customer by eliminating any foreseeable truck-related delays.
- The paperwork necessary for each driver and truck to have at all times while on the road. The customer benefits from this because he or she will know they have movers and equipment that are legal and functional.
